The Return of the Karmapa
Die Wiederkehr des Karmapa
Since the 12th century, the Karmapas have been the spiritual heads of the Kagyu tradition which is one of the four great Buddhist lineages of Tibet. Similar to the Dalai Lamas, the Karmapas are said to take rebirth in order to help all living beings. Prior to their death, the Karmapas describe the circumstances of their rebirth.
The 16th Karmapa (1924-1981) was forced to leave Tibet due to the Chinese invasion and went to India. He later travelled extensively and contributed widely to opening the way to the deep wisdom of the Buddhist path.
This film documents the return of the Karmapa whose 17th incarnation was officially welcomed in New Delhi in March 1994. In addition to impressions from the welcoming ceremony the film also presents unique pictures from the time prior to his official reception as well as the first public "lung" a reading transmission given by His Holiness.
